Diving first originated from people amusing themselves by jumping and diving from natural features such as rocks and cliff peaks. The sport as we know it today however, developed from the sport gymnastics where gymnastic equipment was transferred to the beaches so that gymnasts could perform acrobatics and land in the sea. Diving involving gymnastic movements such as somersaults and/or twists was referred to as "fancy diving". Almost a century ago, "fancy diving" entered the Olympic Games as a new event. Fancy diving, or just diving as we know it today, has indeed developed remarkably into a series of events, including springboard, platform and synchronised diving.
In recent years, diving has evolved with great advances being made in complexity due to improved springboards, trampolines, bubble machines (reducing risk of injury if a diver enters the water in the wrong way), advances in technology such as the use of video and high speed film enabling detailed analysis, and rigs and harnesses for divers to learn correct execution of movements.
To be held at West Wave Aquatic Centre, Henderson, Auckland.
Come try out the most innovative program for your child!
